We survived the night in the hostel and slept surprisingly well. Our room was shared with Abby from Hong Kong who cuddled a small teddy bear in the night, Chloe who works for the Canadian Embassy in Taiwan and Gabriella, a lively young woman of Romanian background who lives in the UK and works for a travel company doing overland tours to Mongolia. The one for folks 18 to 30 is called the "Vodka Train"!
πSpent a warm, sunny day on the hop on hop off tour bus seeing the sights of Munich. Well worth the money. A highlight for us was the stately Schloss Nymphenburg, the summer palace of local royalty. I am awed by the grandeur and rooms opening from each other, each more splendid and covered in gilt than the last. The fairy tales of princes and princesses that I escaped to in my childhood are obviously still with me. π°
Many other beautiful buildings lining the wide streets. Much rebuilding after the war. Munich was more than I had imagined. Had a cold refreshing beer at a cafe rather than a beer garden. Maybe next time!
π² In evidence everywhere are the bicycles ridden by all ages (not a helmet in sight!) some of them very quickly on the special bike lanes that share the sidewalks with pedestrians. Folks do not seem to chain them to anything, just put a lock holding the wheel to the frame. How civilized!
Now on to the train to wake up in Paris tomorrow morning. π
